The name Azazel is a combination of two root words: עָזַז (ʻâzaz) meaning ‘strong’ and אָזַל (‘āzal) meaning ‘to go to and fro’. In Ezekiel it says, “Dan also and Javan going to and fro [אָזַל (‘āzal)] occupied in thy fairs” (Ezekiel 27:19, KJV). When God asked Satan where he comes from, he answered “From going to and fro on the earth” (Job 1:7; 2:2, NKJV). The term עָזַז (ʻâzaz) is used by the psalmist to describe the kind of strength that comes from rejecting God, trusting in wealth, and destroying others: “Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong [עָזַז ʻâzaz] by destroying others!” (Psalm 52:7, NIV). This is exactly how Satan gains power, by destroying (John 10:10) and by enticing people to distrust God: “‘You will not certainly die,’ the serpent said to the woman. ‘For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’” (Genesis 3:4-5, NIV). In 1 Enoch 54:5-6 the ‘hosts of Azazel’ are identified as those who are following Satan. Thus Azazel and Satan likely identify the same being. See also: Origen, Contra Celsum 6.43.
